Handwoven Natural Iringa Baskets | Tanzania

Travel into the highlands of southern Tanzania, where the landscape around Iringa and Njombe is as quietly beautiful as the baskets woven there. In these remote regions, women artisans gather locally harvested milulu grass and transform it into distinctive baskets using natural dyes and a weaving tradition passed down through generations.

Each basket is a true labor of love. The process begins with preparing and dyeing the grasses, often using natural pigments, before the careful handweaving begins. It can take several weeks to complete a single basket—a reminder that beauty made by hand has its own sense of time.

Traditionally, Iringa baskets hold a special place in family life. They are often gifted to brides by the women in their families, carrying with them not only practical purpose, but a gesture of love, continuity and connection.

Today, more than 450 women artisans have been trained in this intricate craft. Fair wages and thoughtful partnerships help turn this centuries-old tradition into meaningful opportunity, supporting families and helping women invest in education, healthcare and a better future.
